My Picks From Artcessorie.com: An Online Shopping Adventure!

Artcessorie.com is a high-end online boutique that features modern furnishings and accessories for the home.  Owner, Connie Dixon, uses her discerning eye and impeccable taste when selecting elements for her site.  Connie has a very colorful personality that lights up any room she enters!  Much like the furnishings and accessories her online boutique features, she is as much unique as she is classic.  There is a great selection ranging from mid-century modern to Hollywood regency.  There are even a couple of traditional pieces mixed in for good favor.

Of the many elements that I saved on Polyvore, I decided to curate a collection for a living room environment.  I also found many pieces for the dining room that would be stunning!  I enjoyed shopping the site and will return for inspiration and sourcing.  Click here to experience Artcessorie.com.  Oh, there is a lovely intro of music when you first enter, so if you're viewing while at work, you may want to adjust the volume on your computer!

My Decorating Madness: It's Time To Let Go and Move On

What a terrific weekend I had!  I totally and completely unplugged and I am so much better today for doing so!  Before I turned off all electronic devices on Friday evening, I let my parents know they would have to call on the land line if they needed me.  I think they knew I was done and needed a serious break!  I've not ever cut myself off in this way before!

Anyhoo, I had so many moments of clarity over the weekend!  Both in business and my personal life.  I got a lot done around my house.  My poor living and dining rooms had seen much better days! I got them cleaned, baseboards and all, organized, and looking soooo much better!  Here is the dilemma...My guy has this large nicely framed photo of a Spanish Moor, that he's had for years.  In our first home, the Moor was in the master bedroom.  At the time, I didn't care!  I was modeling and traveling, so it just didn't register on my radar!  When we moved into our current home, we put it on the foyer wall.  I didn't really want him there, but I figured that was as good a place as any!

Since getting the downstairs painted, the Moor has not had a home, like many of the photos that were taken down.  I do know he will not be back in the foyer!  I've been trying to convince my guy that he no longer has a place in our home and that he's only lasted this long because we didn't have a direction or design plan.  So, me wanting to make a place for the only piece that means something to him, placed him over the fireplace to live with for a week or so.

This is the fireplace wall I mentioned in last week's posting My Decorating Madness: Making Progress.  My attention has now turned to this wall.  I like the brick surround and hearth, but I'm not completely sure if I'll leave it or tile it with something different.  Decisions, decisions!  I've taken down the draperies that were there and will more than likely replace them with a patterned linen.  The sunlight coming through these windows is so intense and will fade the draperies, so I must choose wisely!

Back to the Spanich Moor. I, honestly, would love nothing more than to keep him here because it would mean so much to Pete!  I'm always the first to say, in decorating, use what you love because it will all come together and work in the end.  Well, I need to add balance to that statement!  When trying to combine the styles and personalities of more than one, especially in a room they all share, the above statement isn't completely without fine print.  If the space has taken an obvious direction, try if you will, to introduce a curve ball, but if it doesn't come together, striking the right balance and interupts the flow; you must let go and move on!

Time To Chill: A Weekend To Unplug!

You know, maybe A Time To Chill isn't the most appropriate title for this posting, but that's exactly what I'm doing today and for the rest of the weekend.  A few days ago I was chatting with a friend of mine, Angela, and we were catching up on what's been going on in each other's lives, when I began to vent about how I feel as though the magazine collection I've amassed through the years has taken over my house, and how I may soon be seen on an episode of Hoarder's, one of Angela's favorite shows!  It really is just that bad!

As I was sorting through some of the magazines, I came across the December, 2009 issue of Metropolitan Home magazine.  This is where the title of this posting begins to make a little sense.  While thumbing through, I came across the article featuring the Georgian townhouse of U.K. based designer Kelly Hoppen (pg. 73).   I realized I was running on fumes and needed to chill.  Why did that make me come to this realization?  I spend so much of my time reading, researching, speaking with clients, and doing all of the things that I feel are necessary to grow and progress, until I forgot the very reason why I do all of that stuff to begin with.  The desire to create interiors that are not only beautiful to look at but feel incredible to live in.  Interiors that move you to have peace of mind, a healthy well being, and an amazing sense of self.

I could wax on and on about how much I love her home, but I won't.  If you read yesterday's posting Variety Is The Spice Of Life..., then this excerpt from the article will shed a little bit more light on why her home made me push the pause button.  "Kelly Hoppen is a balance of opposites:  glamorous and functional, extroverted and serene, exuberant and contemplative." (Met Home of the Month: December 2009).  The images in yesterdays posting spoke to one side of my personality, and Ms. Hoppen's home speaks to the other.  The side that is intrinsically me.

There are times, when in order to continue to love what you do, you have to take a step back and remember exactly what that is, why you started doing it, and what about it made you love it.  Even the best of us find ourselves being a wee bit sluggish in doing the things we love.

Even when we're able to do what we love, we still become so consumed by all that it takes to do it, we forget to take some time to just chill.  Take this weekend to do just that!  Technology has made doing our jobs easier but made our lives more complicated.  I am turning off the laptop, iPad, and my iPhone this weekend.  I am one of very few that still have a land line, so if an emergency arises it will be okay!  I look forward to talking with you again on MONDAY and not one day sooner!

Make it AMAZING weekend!

Variety Is The Spice Of Life And Creating A Collected Home

Hi, my name is Rhonda and I have dual personalities.  Yes, I am admitting it.  My husband calls the other personality, Heather!  Heather is the free spirited, fun loving, spontaneous, fly by the seat of her pants kind of girl!  She reacts more on impulse and emotion, without forethought.  Rhonda, on the other hand, is somewhat regimented and methodical in her thinking and the way she does things.  She is a planner, proactive rather than reactive, and basically once the challenge, problem, or obstacle has been identified, she leaps into action with a plan or solution.

Now, as you would imagine, Rhonda is more of a minimalist.  If it doesn't serve a purpose or have some ideal function, then it is probably considered to not be necessary.  She's not much for frivolity, and loses patience with randomness.  This is the point at which Rhonda and Heather collide!  In my opinion, to enjoy a collected home, one must be at ease with things not being perfectly orchestrated or "just so".  Oh, by the way, that was Rhonda's opinion in case you were uncertain!

That doesn't mean that introducing a variety of styles, themes, finishes, textures, and patterns is design running amok; it is simply a more discerning deliberate way of creating a look that expresses ones tastes.  The ability to layer elements and edit when needed, if not a natural talent is one that can be learned with practice and trial and error.

When selecting these images for this posting Rhonda and Heather both agree that the rooms are so well executed in its' selection of elements.  They make for wonderfully interesting and comfortable environments that inspire conversation as well as emote the personality of the owner.

Upon closer inspection of the images, Rhonda has to acquiesce to Heather, because she can appreciate all that she is that makes them a tremendous whole.  Aesthetics doesn't mean being void of any and all viable function, it is merely adding the variety that creates the spice for a fantastic design.  Although Rhonda and Heather find themselves at odds when contemplating the direction of a project, it is their shared love and appreciation for the principles and elements of design that wins time and again, when the rubber meets the road!

Modern Basement Bathroom Renovation

Renovation has finally begun on a basement project that I mentioned a little while ago in an earlier posting.  We are more than excited about all of the possibilities!  Here is a look at what is in the works for the bathroom...

One of my inspiration photos is of a bath designed by architect Scott West.  He was the grand prize winner of the Twenty-third Annual Bath Contest sponsored by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine.  Definitely, take a look at this modern bathroom that was inspired by "his client's experiences at high-end hotels." (Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, July, 2012).  I am inspired by the floating vanity with marble top and the beautiful rich wood finishes.

Taking cues from the frameless shower door and the application of marble tiles inside the shower will give the small bath the open airiness the absence of a window would otherwise provide.  This inspiration photo is from another winner of the Twenty-third Annual Bath Contest.  Terracotta Properties was given the task of renovating a small master bath in need of an update that introduced light and gave "the illusion of an open and airy bath, despite the room's small footprint." (Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, July, 2012).  A great inspiration photo for me because of the size and space limitations my project.

The bathroom is long and narrow, therefore scale, proportion, and light will be crucial in creating a bath that will be comfortable, functional, and a joy to spend time in.  It can only accommodate a shower and with the tightness of space, it is important to create that openness that I spoke about earlier.

Using Olioboard, I created a preliminary design plan of the elements that may be used in the bath.  The client and I both like the idea of using marble for flooring and on the walls, however this may change as the project progresses.  I've selected a floating vanity with drawers, that will be perfect as it doesn't rest on the floor, is a bit narrow, and provides storage for towels, and other bath products.  Using a floating vanity, instead of a standing one, doesn't take up as much visual space.  I would like to include a small bench with a lower shelf or etagere to provide additional places to keep items handy and accessible while using the shower.  With the proper lighting reflecting off the white marble, the brown wood finishes will add depth and warmth.  I look forward to showing you pictures as the project progresses!

Stylesetter Aerin Lauder's New Manhattan Office

I've been an admirer of Aerin Lauder for quite a while now, and when Architectural Digest featured her new Manhattan office in their June issue, I knew that at some point I would have to talk about it!  The new office is a collaboration with acclaimed French designer, Jacques Grange.  I don't have to tell you, because I'm sure you've seen images, of what an absolutely stunning space the two of them have created to be the base of her new home furnishings and fashion company, Aerin.  Aerin Lauder's lifestyle brand will launch in late August, first with its beauty line to be preceeded by jewelry, tabletop items, fabrics, and home decor.  A book on living and style will also debut from Random House in fall of 2013.  I look forward to all of the exciting things her new endeavor will bring!

I've always identified with Aerin because of her love and admiration of her grandmother, Estee.  To read her words of her recounted memories strikes a chord with me.  My grandmother celebrated her eighty-seventh birthday on June 28th, and what a pure joy it's been for me to have her as my grandmother.  She is a petite little thing, who would always be found properly dressed in her perfectly pressed dresses, nylons, jewelry, heels, and handbag; never a shoulder bag!  As you see, she felt shoulder bags were an enemy of perfect posture!  Oh, and let me not forget, powder, lipstick, and Estee Lauder's Youth Dew.  In everything she did, she did it with such ease and elegance.  She took ordinary things and made them amazing!  She was one of my first introductions, only second to my mom, to style, grace, intelligence, strength, and charity!  Just as Aerin's grandmother has made an indelible mark on her life, mine has as well, and for this I too find Aerin Lauder to be an inspiration.

My Decorating Madness: Making Progress!

I thought I would kick this week off showing the progress that I've made over the last few days in my family room!  If you'll remember in an earlier posting, My Decorating Madness, I spoke about the anxiety I felt over pulling together a plan for this totally huge wall!  Well, I think I'm off to a great start and I'm feeling really good about it!  A colleague of mine, Terrell Dinkins of Posh Interiors, stopped by last week as I was finishing up this first phase, and made me feel a lot better about the direction the room has taken!  As I was still a bit unsure, she commented that it was definitely a relection of my personality; immediately putting a lot of my anxiety to rest!

Shown with XProII filter in Instagram

Although you want others to come into your home and like what you've done, it truly matters not if they don't!  As long as you like it, feel good about it, and it is a reflection of you, your life, and how you live, that is soo all that matters!  Honestly, there is an assuredness you will have when it all comes together.  Don't worry if you miss the mark because you can always change your mind!

P.S.  Stay tuned as updates continue.  Next, the fireplace wall.  Wait until you see this!

Blogging Mistakes To Avoid!

We all tend to think that blogging is easy.  It is for the most part!  All one needs to do is sign up on your chosen platform, decide on a name, what your blog will be about, and start typing! But blogging has become much more complex and a huge platform for social networking and marketing. With web technologies advancing and becoming more and more complex day by day, it is time to evolve and become a more savvy blogger.

Let's take a look at a few common mistakes made by most bloggers:

Too many punctuations
Sure the grammar and punctuations are important but over use of them means that your post will not be taken seriously by visitors. Unnecessary use of bold, italics, apostrophes and CAPS just suffocate the blog. So use them only when necessary.

Too many images
Unless you have a blog on art and photography, or the images are used to support your theme and message, it is not wise to use images without reason even if they are the most beautiful pictures. Use the right images to add value to your blog. As a general rule, use only 2 -3 images for a descriptive post to make your post look useful and informative.

Too many posts
Publishing mindless posts, which are of little use to your visitors will only gather negative publicity for your blog. For example, if your blog is about a new
online casino, you can publish useful info relating to the games, any new bonus offers or exciting tournaments coming up. But writing meaningless posts on the casino will only discourage your readers and damage your credibility.
There are many more mistakes to stay away from, but these are the basics and a great place to start!  In every posting you create, be sure to...

Make it an AMAZING weekend!

5 Pinterest Creative Ideas

Check out these 5 creative ideas I pinned on Pinterest!

From time to time, I will stop into The Dollar Tree to see what things I can score for arts and crafts projects for the kids and me to do.  I will be making a trip there to get a couple of silver trays to use chalkboard paint on!  Think of all of the creative ways you can use something like this!

This crafty project involves a couple of coats of chalkboard paint over magnetic paint!  This gives the flexibility of being able to move frames around, add, subtract, and keep it fresh!

Another great idea!  Something else for me to pick up while visiting The Dollar Tree!

Hang photos on wire by attaching clips to secure!  A great way to feature a collection!

This has got to be my favorite!  What a great way to organize things that are used daily in such a chic way!  Black spray paint, magnets and a cool frame, voila!

Love this kitchen!  But love even more the wall with the chalkboard paint that has listed the items needed!  The chestnut finish of the table and cabinet is a great complement!

Well, I guess you guys have a pretty good idea of the projects I will tackle!  I hope you saw some that you will try as well!

Make it AMAZING!
