Make an Impact with Black!

Black is one of those hues that makes any and everything stand at attention.  The key is using it to command the right attention.  Black and white, to me is the most striking; however black paired with any color can yield the most sophisticated and polished results.  It is classic and never loses it's place as one of the most powerful statement makers, whether it be in interiors, fashion, or vehicles of transportation (thinking of cars and motorcycles specifically).  Have you any black in your home?  If not, may I suggest that you explore a place to use it.  It's not just for your wardrobe, you know...

Two Weeks to Paris...

Deirdre and I have been talking about this trip for a year now.  It began as many conversations between friends do.  You know, the ones where you talk about escaping somewhere to just be you; no ones wife, mom, daughter, sister, etc., etc.  Deirdre took the reins and actively began looking for plane tickets, hotels, and adventures in August, 2012.  Can I tell you what an amazing trip she has planned!  We should all be so blessed to have a friend like her!  Um, no you can't have her!  She has all of the friends she needs right now!  I cannot wait to chronicle my delights in the city of lights...

5 Pinterest Pumpkin Picks

I think this weekend the kids and I will visit one of the many pumpkin patches in our area.  We enjoy going because we go on the hayrides, eat yummy caramel apples, drink hot apple cider, and have a blast creeping out over the funny, bumpy, sometimes scary looking gourds, squash, and other veggies we only see this time of year!

We've carved pumpkins in the past and roasted the seeds, which was a lot of fun; but it was also a little tedious.  Last year we painted and decorated them using different things like glitter, ribbons, and bugs we made from old fashioned clothes pins.  That was a little messy, but it was so cool to see who could be the most creative.  I think that's what we'll do again this year along with decorating the many pinecones we picked up last year on our hikes on nature trails and park visits.  Other things that we gather on our walks are birch bark and sticks, and acorns.  You can find all of this for sale at Pottery Barn and other retailers, but just a quick look around while out in nature yields all of these things for free.  We've collected some of the most amazing leaves in beautiful colors, but I've not yet learned to preserve them where they don't dry out and crumble.  Note to self:  Research for solutions!  If you know of any, please email me and I will publish your suggestions!

When we're done with our creations, we place them on tables, the mantle and hearth, and everywhere else there is a flat surface, including the floor.  You know how much I love randomly placed decor!  A great place to get pumpkin and Fall decor inspiration is www.bhg.com and www.marthastewart.com.  I really love the ideas that Martha Stewart and her staff come up with!  I still have one of her Halloween publications from a while ago that I refer back to for creative ideas.  Both sites have really easy to do projects that don't require a lot of time and effort.

Whatever the weekend finds you doing...

With A Man In Mind

The month of September came and went with no posting of "With A Man In Mind"!  Please accept my apology!  I will do another one a little later this month to make up for the one I missed.  I enjoy doing these postings!  Having worked in fashion and now in interior design, I am surrounded by some of the most stylish men!  My best friend being one of them.  It's always inspiring to see men put a little time and effort into not just their personal appearance, but how they live as well.  It speaks volumes when men have their own style, and totally embrace it, owning all that they are (and are not)!  Is that what "swagger" is?  Well, whatever you call it, it's refreshing and nice to see!

Making A Statement with Bookcases, Shelving, and Etageres

I'm always so interested to see how people live with books, treasured collectibles, and random pieces.  Long gone are the days when bookshelves were used to store books only.  Homeowners are now embracing shelving and cabinetry of all kinds as apart of the interior decor and using them to make a statement.  Some of the statements are very deliberate and some totally random; but the mix, whether eclectic or traditional are adding a lot of interest and telling a story like only they can.

Used as a room divider and styled to further the contemporary theme of the home, this open shelving in the same finish as the floor, continues the open and airy feel of the two spaces.

What an eye-catching way to bring color into the room and transform the contents of the etageres from being ordinary to something you now want to take a closer look at.

Surrounding a doorway with built-ins is a great use of space that truly enhances this intimate seating area, which now becomes a great place to curl up, relax, and get lost in a good book.

The headphones on the chair would suggest a place to listen to music, read, and even watch movies.  What a creative way to have all of these items handy, than by having them become apart of the decor and easy to find at a moments notice.

What I love most about this built-in is the charcoal gray finish.  How clever are the frames mounted to the outside of the shelves, and the random placement of books and objects.  A wonderful example of perfectly imperfect living at it's best.

I believe this to be a Barry Dixon design.  What a wonderful designer and a great use of classical elements.  Although the contents of this cabinet, along with the cabinet itself is gorgeous, what a very lovely idea to hang draperies along the wall to frame the cabinet and add softness.

Taking note of how books and objects are arranged on shelves; some horizontal, some verical; adds interest and makes it become more of an artistic statement.   Isn't this just so much better than just an arrangement of books?

Again, taking the time to be deliberate in how items are grouped; keeping in mind their color, size, and theme; and placing them as collections is a wonderful way to tell a story an advance and idea or theme.
