I Know It's Cliche, But Thank God It's Friday!

You know what?  Not that it even matters right now!  I'm getting ready to dive head first into getting my space ready at the Inspiration House and you know what they say about the best laid plans!  I've got my timeline set and all of the pieces in play; now it's time to execute!  Yesterday in a meeting, I did encounter a bit of a hmmm, what will I call this... unexpected additions to my space.  In that moment, it totally threw me, but I have truly put together the most amazing team ever (whom I will feature in the days leading up to the Inspiration House opening), that were right there with me supporting me and letting me know that it will be great and they are there for me in any way possible.  See folks, this is what I've blogged about several times in the past!  When God is in the details and when you are allowing him to show you who to talk to, where to go, and what to do; it is really effortless because He has done all of the work!  You just have to take a seat at the dinner table and enjoy the feast only He can prepare!

I now have a drive that I didn't have before, and that is what makes this quote all the more relevant!  My dad always said to me, because he enjoys so much what he does, he doesn't consider it work.  Now, that doesn't mean he loves every mundane part of what his job entails, it just means that he has such a great passion and devotion to it, the end result makes the obstacles and challenges faced worthwhile!  My exact sentiments for the exciting challenge that lie ahead of me!

Everyone knows that preparation is key to getting any and everything done well!  Success just doesn't roll out the red carpet and send you an invitation to the party.  Okay, well in some exceptional cases maybe it does, BUT success that comes overnight leaves in the morning!  Don't be fooled!  You had better believe that!

There is a surge of energy that I get when the things I want most just doesn't seem to want me as badly!  So, I have to put on my big girl panties, roll up my sleeves and get to it!  No, I don't always want to, but let me tell ya (just keeping it real here) I'll be damned if I don't put up one hell of a fight!  I'm not likely to turn around and go in a different direction just because it doesn't look good or possible or difficult.  However, with that said, things are only that "head hitting a brick wall" challenging when I'm not walking in the spirit!  Somehow, I feel like the Lord just read this and began shaking His head.  Well, I will say this, He knows me better than I know myself, so this really doesn't come as any surprise to Him and He loves me all the same!

Through all of my faults, imperfections, behavoiral dilemmas, attitude flair ups, and really just plain old crazy mental moments; I truly do like who I'm becoming!  I can call myself out on all of my messes and know that it's okay, no one was hurt (and if they were, sincere apologies are in order), and move on knowing the next minute is brand new and another opportunity to make good and get it right!

Deck the Halls: How to Throw the Perfect Christmas Party

With Christmas approaching, many of us will begin thinking about getting together with friends and family for festive gatherings. Christmas is the ultimate party season with research suggesting a 7% rise in Americans attending Christmas parties back in 2011. Perhaps this year you’ll be the one to host a party in your home, whether that be a small, intimate soiree or a full blown event on a much larger scale. Whichever you decide, here are some tips to ensure that your big bash is stylish, sophisticated and full of holiday spirit.

 Décor

Decorating your home for a Christmas party doesn’t always mean dragging out ancient, garish baubles and strings of green tinsel. Over the last few years, Christmas décor trends have veered on the creative, eccentric side with Gothic and fantasy themes prevalent. This year, however, Christmasworld suggests that décor is getting back to basics with white, classic, natural and self made decorations coming back.

With this in mind, why not opt for a classy, sophisticated ‘white Christmas’ theme with white decorations, crystal tableware and clear, twinkling fairy lights. Jazz it up with some silver tinsel, hanging snowflakes and white, floral table decorations – poinsettias and mistletoe are ideal, traditional Christmas flowers.

Minimalism is always a great way to secure a contemporary, crisp look with defined shapes and patterns. Bear this in mind when decorating your tree; sparse decorations and elegant LED lighting can make your tree a classy centre piece to your party.

Ambience

Any party needs a good ambience and in order to set a relaxed, festive mood for your guests you need to consider a sensory itinerary including subtle lighting, appropriate music and even inviting smells.

An open fire is a great way to provide a cosy, warming atmosphere but you may find that it could over heat a small room full of guests, so opt for candles instead. Despite minimalism being a great cornerstone for décor, Christmas is all about abundance and so stacking candles or tee lights together in vast numbers as a means of creating low lighting can really give a voluminous, luxurious effect.

Creating a suitable playlist is also essential for any party. If you’re trying to opt for a stylish, elegant mood then choosing 1940s greats such as Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Sinatra are both classy and Christmassy. Instrumental music is also a nice way to provide relaxing, background noise.

Mulled wine, gingerbread, cinnamon, pine – these are all smells that we associate with Christmas and these days can often be found all year round in the form of extravagant, scented candles. These are a great way to light the room as well as providing those memorable Christmas smells. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on these then use the real items themselves – a fresh tree or a pan of mulled wine left heating on the stove will fill the house with lovely fragrances.

The Dress

As host, all eyes will be on you so making sure that you look as fabulous as your home does is imperative. This year some of the ultimate fashion trends include sequinned dresses which have inspired a collection by desginer Anna Sui. What better way to sparkle this Christmas than to be covered in sequins? Other popular fashion trends this year include metallics, velvet and lace dresses. Teamed with bright coloured tights and chunky wedge heels you can combine chic and fun at the same time in order to be the belle of the ball.

Food and Drinks

Elegant finger foods that can be handed around on a platter are a must have for your Christmas party. There are several types of hors d’oeuvres, canapés and miniature versions of classic dishes that you can offer out casually to your guests so why not try and adapt some Christmas favourites in your scrumptious selection? Open, miniature mincemeat tarts could be an alternative to regular mince pies whilst Welsh rarebit, smoked salmon and even turkey/cranberry wrapped in puff pastry are all delicious savoury options.

When it comes to drinks, mulled wine is always a Christmas favourite and easy to make in large quantities. However for a more glamorous edge then why not try making your own cocktails. Cosmopolitans and mojitos are popular all year round but for that extra festive decadence, indulge in some Irish Cream liqueur based cocktails or infuse rich, liqueurs such as Borbourn and cognac with Christmassy spices and cloves. A sure way to warm your guest’s cockles and ensure that nobody wants to be left in trust of the designated driver position.

Oh The Places You Will Go! Entry's, Foyers, and Hallways...

Not that I've not ever given entry's, foyers, and hallways much thought in the past, I can honestly say not as much as I have in the last couple of months.  Since submitting my proposal and being selected to do the lower hallway of the upcoming 2013 Cathedral Antiques Show Inspiration House, I've imagined, sketched, and researched to create just the right concept and theme for my space.  The Inspiration House is all about integrating antiques and vintage furnishings and elements into our more contemporary interiors today, and doing so seamlessly.  So, I think it only natural for me to notice these spaces more than I have in the past.

It is quite common to overlook these transitional spaces; not giving them the thought and consideration they deserve.  We often look at them as a means to move and transition from one space to another, not recognizing the wonderful opportunity to create something that makes this journey through our homes more adventurous, exciting, and beautiful.

I know, I know, typically these spaces aren't very large, so coming up with great ideas may elude us.  These are some of the most difficult spaces to design because you do want to consider the size, where they're located, and to what areas they lead.  But these obstacles shouldn't deter us from being creative and designing the most impactful spaces that we can.

Doing a faux finish, a beautiful wall covering, tile even, or a mural is a wonderful way to go.  If this isn't possible, there are numerous designs that can be done with paint; whether it be stensiling, stripes, etc., etc. just find what works best for your home and your lifestyle.

Zushing the space with art, interesting lighting, appropriately scaled furnishings, plants, you name it, will also make a tremendous impact and probably one that is completely unexpected to those who experience the space for the first time.  Also, be sure not to neglect the ceiling and floor!  Let me tell you, a little here and there on these two planes go a very long way!

If you're fortunate to have a larger space, go ahead and treat it like a room!  Add the furnishings, the rugs and draperies, and all of the elements that make a room an incredible place to live in.  There is no reason to do less just because you don't spend a great deal of time in them.  In fact, you should do more to make your travels from space to space one that is pleasureable and makes you happy that you did!

Furniture, Floors, Walls, and Such...

Have you ever walked into a room and was just immediately arrested by the elements that made it?  I love it when that happens.  It really inspires me when I experience a positive, emotional connection to a room.  Every room emotes a feeling, whether it is harmonious, energetic, menacing, or relaxing, the feeling is real and the elements that create the room is like, in many ways the puppet master...

Take this room for example, it is filled with light, patterns, and the color palette is soothing and sophisticated with shades of browns, taupes, grays, and cream.  Not only are you able to visually experience the room, but physically as well, with the textural qualities of the flooring, wall covering, and luxe upholstery.

Glamorous...the silkened detail of the wall covering and the velvety richness of the sofa!  But then, to not take itself to seriously, the introduction of the low modern coffee table in a honey wood finish.  There is always room for animal print and the whimsy of an inquisitive feline sculpture.  Typically I would frown at the singular, small framed painting, but not this time.  It's just enough to add interest without covering up that amazing wall!  How incredible indeed the way the rug, sofa, and wall play nice with each other in a balance of fluidity.

I want to lay on this sofa and read a book or two!  The lofty pillows and cushions are beckoning for me.  I have to wonder, does anyone actually sit here?  I'm a fluffer, but even over time the rear end of many users will just wear a sofa down!  I can imagine that this carpet is so soft underfoot.  A definite delight for the feet!  Art is everything in a room.  I have such a greater appreciation for it's magical powers!  Why did it ever take me so long to grasp what a difference it makes in an interior?  Well, now that I have it will never be lost on me again!

There is something a bit off in this space to me... I can't put my finger on it.  I love all of the elements!  The rug, the furnishings, the wall covering, etc., etc. are all beautiful, but something is just off.  I'm not sure how I would feel in this space.  Just looking at this photo, I feel somewhat restless.  Again, I think it's beautiful!  I'm just not comfortable... Hmm, maybe the wall needs something else?  What do you think?  Am I a total nutso for feeling a little disconcerted here?

These are the kinds of sitting places that I would love to read a book, have a cup of tea, or chat with a girlfriend.  I feel I would be in a very reflective mood (and not because of the mirrored wall).  I like the moody abstract quality of the painting.  I could get lost in it.  The nailhead detail of this settee and the wonderful turned wood legs are lovely and somewhat delicate, complementing the petite, bamboo glass topped table.

Such a lovely space!  It wouldn't quite work in my home, but oh how I adore this.  The tapestry above is exquisite and the sofa is striking in pink.  I don't think it's too much at all!  I think the rich finish of the sofa's frame and the side table adds a bit of depth and assists this space in finding a nice balance in a feminine and modern way.  Even the flooring helps to invoke a slight rough quality that keeps the girly vibe at bay, no?

Ahh, how I love draperies!  I would love to drape a room in a gorgeous, ceiling to floor fabric.  I could let my imagination have it's way and lead me to places I've not been in my creative adventures.  There is something very regal about this sitting space.  Could it be the chairs that sit against the backdrop of the draperies?  Could it be the richness of the fabrics used?  Could it be the symmetry?  Whatever it is I would enjoy my time here.  Would you?

Monday's Office Space And The Journey To Find It!

I hope everyone had the most amazing Thanksgiving holiday weekend!  Mine was filled with spending time with my family, cooking, and getting the house ready for Christmas decorating!  O my gosh, we went to a Christmas tree farm and cut down our very own tree!  We've not ever done that before and it was totally a lot of fun!  I may upload the video I shot!  Hmmm, I don't know, I hate the way I sound on those things!  Anyhoo, lot's of fun was had by all!!!

Before we get to the actual images, I would like to be forthcoming and say that often times I am somewhat lazy, yes lazy, when it comes to searching for the original credit for photos.  Not that I am trying to take credit for the beautiful images that I post, that's just wrong; but sometimes finding who shot them, the publication, or the designer is a daunting task.  I do feel like everyone should be given credit for their work!  It's only fair and it's the right thing to do.  Therefore I will always cite my source.  With Pinterest being so huge right now and being able to capture the site an image was pinned from, it makes it a lot easier to find, as well as the use of Google Image Search.

So, I first saw this image on Pinterest, of course, and pinned it to my Work Spaces board from Ashlina Kaposta.  The Decorista, herself pinned it from The Dust Jacket, a blog much like my own, edited by Debra in the Australian countryside, which led me to The Rag Rug blog, edited by Saani and Joona in Turku, Finland.  This is their studio, where they work, entertain, and live.  I love, love, love the desk!  It takes up so very little visual space and is very clean and modern!

I wish I could have an all white space, but unfortunately I would need to clean daily (maybe a couple of times daily) in order to not be overrun by dust bunnies, unsightly marks, and God only knows what else!  A large mirror leaning against a wall is never a bad idea!  It was recently brought to my attention that I have mirrors in every room in my house.  I really had not ever noticed that before.  Really!  Isn't it funny that someone who notices details did not notice this in her own home?  Interesting... I will analyze this later, for sure!

I really need to get some of these lucite organizers!   It makes it so much easier to see and grab whatever is needed without wasting precious time going on a scavenger hunt... Always a fan of having things like books, magazines, photos and posters in plain site to become apart of the decor.  Speaking of organizers, I am such a Container Store fanatic!  I could spend hours in there planning an efficient and organized work space, pantry, laundry, kitchen, etc.  Oh, and they have some of the best gift wrap!  No, they didn't pay me for this plug (I wish they had), but they do have some great stuff for wrapping lovely gifts!  You should totally check them out this holiday and let me know what you think.  I know, I seem to wonder off topic sometimes!  I did say this blog was about my "random musings", didn't I?

I am very grateful I do!

Prepare for Holiday Cooking With a Plan

With the holidays approaching, many people are thinking about all the preparations that need to be made for upcoming parties and gatherings. For many people, these preparations include planning menus and special treats for parties, house guests and even for gifts. However, with the high cost of food and so many people struggling financially, making smart decisions regarding food choices is extremely important. Fortunately, great meals and treats can be prepared for much less than you might think.

Careful planning is an essential part of saving money. For many people, this means keeping a well-stocked pantry. Whether you are preparing for an emergency or simply purchasing food at today's prices in order to offset rising costs, a well-stocked pantry can be an excellent way to save on food costs. As you think about menu plans, be sure to consider both the nutritional value as well as the overall cost. It can be easy to get wrapped up in a particular menu only to find that the cost of ingredients is prohibitive.

If you have an idea of the type of menu you would like to prepare, start researching recipes. Be sure to read through the recipe and write down the ingredients you will need. In addition to reading the list of ingredients and the directions, be sure to read reviews from other cooks. People who have tried the recipe often have helpful information to share. This might include steps to make the process easier, clarification regarding ingredients or even substitutions that reduce costs. Never underestimate the value of these comments; after all, these are the people who have actually tried the recipe and have important feedback to help you get the best results.

If you have been working on acquiring a well-stocked pantry, you probably have most of the ingredients you need already in your pantry; however, if there are items you need, be sure to make a list. If the thought of heading to the store and fighting the crowds does not seem appealing, you can certainly find a great alternative at places such as Foodinsurance.com - emergency food supply. Purchasing from a company that specializes in emergency food supplies often means that you can save money, especially when you need larger quantities of certain items.

Anyone who has ever made a fruit cake has probably come across the common problem of locating the necessary ingredients. Fortunately, there are lots of stores that offer dried or freeze dried fruits online, you can get all of the dried fruit variations and nuts you need. Whether you want to make one or two fruit cakes or several dozen to give away as gifts, getting everything you need a click of the mouse away can be a huge convenience. When it comes to holiday baking and cooking, convenience and savings are important factors to keep in mind.

Draw Me a Bath and Let the Day Melt Away!

You know, it's actually quite funny; I'm not much of a "bath" person.  Honestly, I think them to be quite gross in fact.  However there are times when I feel a little stretched beyond my limits, when I think a bath is just what I need in order to regroup, refresh, and renew.  Surely, some of you know exactly what I'm talking about...Anyhoo, I'm having one of those moments!

One of these days I am going to get the courage up to photograph my bathroom for you guys to see.  I like it, I do.  I've just not done very much to it since the builder selected their less than lovely elements.  Sure, I've painted the walls with Restoration Hardware's Stone paint finish.  Hmmm, that's about it!  But, I will say, that went a long way in making a difference.  It has a separate soaking tub and shower, and a nice size double vanity with a slab of a mirror, and those tragic makeup lights above!  Oy!  It also has a separate water closet, with no door, but I'm okay with that, as I think a little claustrophobia may set in if I were to hang one.  Definitely wouldn't want that!  Nothing that can't be changed and done so pretty inexpensively!  Oh, and let me not forget the hideous brass fixtures.  Ugh!  Although brass is making a comeback, just not "this" brass!  The ceiling is vaulted and I could do a beautiful chandelier!  I could really trick this space out!  And I will...one day!

This window is fantastic!  There's nothing better than applying makeup in natural light.  The tub strikes me as being very comfortable and relaxing.  You know, almost cocoon like.

Although much of the bathtub isn't seen here, I do like the small silver and glass etagere standing charge with the necessary bath salts, loufahs, towels, and books at the ready.  That shower looks really tempting to me!  Loving the marble application on the walls and ceiling!

I think this to be a handsome bathroom.  Not necessarily because it has masculine elements, but because it's linear, simplistic, and seemingly very functional.  I like the louvered skylight above and the slated shelf below the vanity for towels or other bath acoutrements.  Hmm, so maybe masculine is not the word that I'm looking for.  Maybe, "smart"?

What I love about this bath:  The tile!  The draperies framing the tub!  The small chair!  Last, but certainly not least, that freaking incredible chandelier!  Moving on...

One word...STRIKING!  Is that a swan fixture delivering the muscle relaxing, mind soothing water into the tub?  Could that be an arm chair in the corner with a throw draped casually about the arm awaiting my exit from my tension relieving bath?  I wonder what music am I listening to?  Oh, I know!  Shirley Horne with a little bit of Coltrane...ahhh "Here's To Life (and the joys it brings)".

Monday's Office

The countdown to Thanksgiving has begun!  If you're working this week, find excitement in knowing that it will be a short one!  One that ends in taking time to give thanks for all that you have and all that you are!

What do you think about this space?  Is it your cup of tea?  I actually happen to like the wood flooring along with the Greek key rug.  The style of the desk is a great choice painted in white.  I'm really vibing on the Missoni inspired upholstered desk chair and I also think what a wonderful way to add character by introducing draperies to indicate windows that aren't even there!  A very symetrical work space that is easy on the eye and not difficult to pull off.  This one is made special by the color, pattern, and interesting elements that was selected!

Not Your Traditional Dining Room

Yesterday I attended a special presentation featuring Carolyne Roehm and the introduction of her amazing new book Flowers.  It is gorgeous and if I'm not mistaken, she did most of the photography herself.  She is such a multi-talented, dynamic woman and I want to be like her when I grow up!  Anyhoo, she spoke about how she no longer has a room specifically for formal dining.  A couple of reasons; it was a little depressing to walk by the room and see this long mahogany table with ten or more chairs, and she just didn't entertain for large groups enough to have a space just for that.

What she now has are rooms throughout her home that are designed to accommodate impromptu dining and even those with larger numbers.  I love this!  What a wonderful idea!  I have to share this with you as well; if you've not ever met her or had the great pleasure to hear her speak, you've truly missed out on an inspiring, slap your knee, doubled over in laughter treat!  She was speaking about the treasures that she collects in her home when she mentioned collecting rare pieces, antiques, blue porcelain, etc., when she also said she collects "made in Taiwan yesterday"!  It was totally hilarious and so refreshing!  Definitely the highlight of my day!

I am so loving the use of mirrors to cover walls in rooms!  Just look how spectacular this space looks!  The wide crown molding is the finishing touch and frames the wall and mirror beautifully.  Hanging a painting in front of the mirror takes away the fragility of it being a mirrored wall.  And did you notice how the door is mirrored as well to create a seamless appearance?  The finish of the floor, table, and chandelier warms the room; adding character and depth, and keeps the room from floating away.  These are the things I love about great design and amazing interiors!  I am inspired!
