Not Your Traditional Dining Room

Yesterday I attended a special presentation featuring Carolyne Roehm and the introduction of her amazing new book Flowers.  It is gorgeous and if I'm not mistaken, she did most of the photography herself.  She is such a multi-talented, dynamic woman and I want to be like her when I grow up!  Anyhoo, she spoke about how she no longer has a room specifically for formal dining.  A couple of reasons; it was a little depressing to walk by the room and see this long mahogany table with ten or more chairs, and she just didn't entertain for large groups enough to have a space just for that.

What she now has are rooms throughout her home that are designed to accommodate impromptu dining and even those with larger numbers.  I love this!  What a wonderful idea!  I have to share this with you as well; if you've not ever met her or had the great pleasure to hear her speak, you've truly missed out on an inspiring, slap your knee, doubled over in laughter treat!  She was speaking about the treasures that she collects in her home when she mentioned collecting rare pieces, antiques, blue porcelain, etc., when she also said she collects "made in Taiwan yesterday"!  It was totally hilarious and so refreshing!  Definitely the highlight of my day!

I am so loving the use of mirrors to cover walls in rooms!  Just look how spectacular this space looks!  The wide crown molding is the finishing touch and frames the wall and mirror beautifully.  Hanging a painting in front of the mirror takes away the fragility of it being a mirrored wall.  And did you notice how the door is mirrored as well to create a seamless appearance?  The finish of the floor, table, and chandelier warms the room; adding character and depth, and keeps the room from floating away.  These are the things I love about great design and amazing interiors!  I am inspired!

Make it AMAZING!
