What I Know About Art...

Not much!  I just know what I like and how it makes me feel.  I'm familiar with a few artists and can recognize certain styles.  I'm fond of the Impressionist, but I'm partial to abstract paintings and figurative sketches.  There are styles that I never thought I would have an interest in, but now that I have traveled more and met some of the most interesting people, my tastes and attitude towards different styles has evolved and I now see things differently.

The thing that I look for most when selecting art is how it makes me feel.  I'm captured more by works of art that draws me in and before I know it, I've lost minutes in time just wandering around inside my mind, exploring the depths and possibilities of that particular piece.  There is something very liberating about that.

When selecting a piece of art for your home, of course you're going to do the obvious and consider where you would like to place it and the measurements of the surrounding space; but also contemplate the function of the space to ensure you select a piece that evokes the desired mood and sets just the right tone.  Brightly colored paintings do not say come, sit, relax, and let's reflect upon our day and our lives... You get what I'm saying, right?

Art is a very powerful form of expression and although you don't have to be an art scholar to shop and buy the right pieces, it does help to educate yourself on the types that you are most attracted to, to better understand why you are drawn to that particular style.  You want to be able to talk passionately about it when people comment and inquire about what a lovely piece you have.

No need to concern yourself with, "will it match the existing decor".  What I have come to find over the years is that one typically doesn't stray too far away from certain colors, patterns, etc.  And when you do, it really is okay because it just adds a bit of whimsy and spice to your space.  Sometimes, if the piece is just so amazing, it's worth it to re-work the entire room to accommodate it; although not entirely necessary!

Whatever your tastes in art, be a collector.  Nothing says quite as much about you than your home that is filled with collections that make you happy and tell the story of who you are!  Yes, you are allowed to grow and change!  So, purchase for who you are now, not who you want to be.  Wouldn't it be so interesting for your home to tell the history of that growth and change?

Monday's Office + Interior Designer Kate Hume

I don't know about yours, but my weekend flew by!  It was great!  Both days I spent time with friends laughing and talking and...anyhoo!  I even managed to get a little work in.  Hmm, came to some realizations as well.  That's not completely true.  Just a couple of things that I already knew, but was thinking it was something that I didn't really need to tackle right away.  NOT!  It's time to tackle them and plan for them accordingly.  Moving on...

This office strikes me more as one suited for a man, but I can see the softer persuasion using it as well.  It just needs a few more feminine elements.  I love the simplicity of it with the unexpected zebra rug.  I wonder what profession is the person who uses this space.  I would think no nonsense, astute, but with a sense of humor; not taking themselves too seriously.  What do you think?

I really like the rich wood finish of the cabinets in this library.  Still very modern with simplistic and functional details such as the ladder and the long arm task lamp mounted to be used when needed at the table below.  I'm not all that sure about the black birds/crows perched in front of the gentleman's portrait?  A little too Alfred Hitchcock for me!

Wall compositions are a wonderful way to add interest and character to a space.  I love the cabinet mounted on the wall in the midst!  How great is the low cabinet below!  Such a well designed wall and room!

A really chic, luxe closet!  That flooring looks incredibly soft and it complements the wall covering nicely.  I'm ready to move in now!

This is the picture that began the journey to finding the other great images.  I pinned this image on Pinterest and searched the original source to find Kate Hume, and amazingly talented interior designer.  I hope that you will visit her site and take a look at the incredible designs she has created around the world in interiors, furnishings, and glass accessories.

Classical Architectural Moldings in Interiors

I attended a classical architectural interiors class a few weeks ago, which focused on the correct way to use moldings in interiors.  Prior to going to this class whenever I would walk into homes, especially new construction, I would notice the moldings and trim and think how nice it looked.  Now after having taken the class, when I walk into some of those same interiors I notice the mistakes!  Yikes!

Knowing how to properly select and design moldings is a skill.  There are rules that should be followed and followed to the letter!  Brent Hull Of Hull Historical, in Fort Worth, TX instructed the class and gave very useful information that is a great foundation for knowing what to look for and where to start when designing and installing.  If you love the look of moldings in interiors and are thinking of installing it to architecturally enhance your home, I would suggest you visit
brenthullcompanies.com before you begin!  It is a great place to start!

Design Inspiration: Mirrored Walls

It wasn't that long ago when the mention of mirrored walls would immediately make me think of those tacky mirrored sliding closet doors that were trimmed in shiny brass or some other garish metal.  If you have or have had these in your home, you're not alone!  So have I!  Thank goodness, times have changed and we have become a lot more discerning in our design choices!

The clean mirrored, vertical panels of this office space further enhances the modern look and feel; making it very chic and sophisticated.

I like how this floor to ceiling mirror adds depth and creates an artful composition through the reflection of the items placed in front of it.

I really didn't think I would like an entire wall of mirrors as shown in the above image, however with artwork and sconces nicely hung and arranged it is actually quite nice and tasteful.

Screens are a great way to introduce mirrors in a non-commital way.  This one is lovely.

Again, I think when treated as just a wall by hanging pictures and such, and placing furnishings in front, enhances the rooms personality and adds an elegant quality.

Impactful and stunning!

You can never go wrong with floor to ceiling mirrors in the bathroom!  Well, as long as they look like these!

Monday's Office + One More

A light and airy space does wonders for the creative mind!  My favorite elements of this office are the etagere's, the glass desktop supported by two medium-sized pedestals, and the lighting fixture.  I also really like the selection of colors with the very soft blue/gray and punch of salmon pink.  This office is a great balance of color, light, and textures.  I would imagine I could get a great deal done in this space and when I need a break, all I would need to do is sit back in that comfy chair, look around at the soft muted colors, and let my mind take it all in until inspiration finds me once again!

It was such a beautiful day Sunday, so we headed to the basketball court to shoot some hoops with Noah!  I haven't shot around in a long time and was fully expecting to be quite sore this morning!  Surprise, surprise!  I was NOT!  Hmmm, I must not be in as bad a shape as I thought!  We didn't play full court or anything, but anyone who's even played half court can tell you with the rigors of defense, starting, stopping, running, jumping, and shooting; basketball in any form can be a bit exhausting!

To cool off we took a walk on one of the trails just beyond the courts.  It was really nice and cool walking in between the trees.  We were all a little disappointed in not seeing any deer or wild turkey.  The turkeys, I can understand, as it is getting a little too close too Thanksgiving!

Gillian getting in a little one on one time with Dad.  No, I didn't let her dye her hair blue and purple!  She has blue and purple hair mixed in with her braids.  Hey, I try to let her express herself when it comes to hair and clothing!  Some things I'm just not ready for and it is a definite NO, but other things, I'm pretty okay with!  My mom trained me well.  Pick your battles and be very watchful!

It's Noah's time for a chat with Dad.  I'm sure there wasn't much talking going on.  I don't know, guys just seem to be able to communicate through their silence!  It's kinda weird, almost like mental telepathy or something?

A DIY Project: Pickle Jars, Burlap, and Twigs

Okay, so last weekend the kids and I began our Fall decorating.  I've been saving pickle and olive jars for the last few weeks to use for school projects (there's always something going on), arts and crafts, and just basic organization of crayons, markers, yada, yada, yada.  Anyhoo, I thought maybe I would just place tealights and votives in the jars and randomly scatter them around the house; mainly in the foyer, hallway, and loft.

I'd remembered I had some burlap left over from a table covering that I'd made a while back and decided I would use it to cover the jars.  I didn't want to use glue because I may want to reuse the fabric for something else and I only had a little bit of double stick tape; so my mind went to the spools and spools of ribbon that I've accummulated over the years.  But then I thought to myself; no, no, no use the Hermes or Louis Vuitton ribbon that you have.  Hermes looked better as the LV ribbon was much too wide.

I already had birch twigs from years ago that I purchased at Pottery Barn for little to nothing at the end of the season.  Always the best time to buy!  Whenever we're in Little Rock during the Fall and Winter, the kids and I go out into my parents yard and load up on pine cones, acorns, fallen leaves, and branches.  The center canister is just the glass from one of my hurricanes.  I placed a simple pillar candle inside and when it is lit, it has the coolest glow!  Needless to say, it is lit every evening.

The leaf garland is from Hobby Lobby.  Again, on sale!  I know some of you would rather make your own garland from real natural elements, but obviously not me!  I don't particularly care for silk flowers, but they do have their uses.  Real florals and botanicals are ALWAYS best!  They can be pretty costly if you're changing them out frequently, but so are some silks!

The decorating will continue this weekend as well!  I know that sometimes the idea of decorating can seem a bit too much and can kinda be a little overwhelming, but do a little bit at a time and maybe keep them contained to a particular area.  This will make clean up go much quicker and easier!

Design Influence: Modern Glamour

The striking contrast of the dark finishes used on the moldings and floor gives the room structure to seamlessly carry the cream and ivory color palette used in the furnishings and the wall finish.  The singular painting and arched built-in shelving was all that was needed to punctuate the look.

The chandelier, mirror, and silhouette of the chairs injects feminine flair giving the room character and depth with elegant sophistication.

The curve of the stairs along with it's railing and the custom tufted banquette in a lush fabric furthers the Hollwood regency style.  I love the birdcage-esque crystal chandelier!  Very glamorous!

Using draperies to line the walls is another glamorous touch.  I would feel like I'm in an old black and white movie lounging on the chaise and drinking a glass of wine (white wine)!

Marble flooring, glass, and antiqued mirrors grounded by rich dark wood finishes...can you think of anything they missed?  I cannot!  Well, maybe I would have considered using different lighting fixtures, but the work here is beautiful!

Mission accomplished in this home that was built in the 1930's.  The color palatte of ivory and cream with dark finishes and details, such as the furnishings, moldings and cabinetry enhance the look and feel that the homeowners were after; 1920's Hollywood regency.

Fashion Inspiration: What I Want Right Now!

I love Burberry's Fall 2012 Collection!  They really did military right with their coats and jackets this season!  Oh my gosh, just look at the soft, lush corduroy used in the riding jacket and skirt!  You've got to click on the link below to see up close the amazing details!  The same attention to detail was used on the leather Hobo bag with belts wrapping around the bag, giving it a chic edge!

I'm falling all over the Alexander McQueen blue suede boots!  There is something about a dark or midnight blue (anything) in suede or velvet or mohair that is incredible!  Again, the gold buckle detail along with the rounded toe platform, and the towering 5.5" heel!  My goodness, this is "tough luxe" without a doubt!  Wearing that boot would put me at 6'3"!  And I would wear them as if I were 5'2"!

Bib necklaces are my favorites right now.  I wear them with simple blouses and T-shirts, so they are able to make the statement they were designed to make.  Whether I'm wearing a pair of jeans, a lovely dress, or a jacket/blazer, it is the ultimate accessory and always gets major compliments!  It is the piece that deserves to stand alone!

I've gotten a little slack on my manicures here lately.  Sorry!  Well, unless you want to include the ones Gillian gives me...hmm, anyhoo!  I'm really vibing on the nail art that's happening right now!  I think it's pretty cool and I totally like this look in black on black chevron!  This pattern is not just for interiors, my friends!

It's Good To Let Go Of The Plan And Be Lead From Within

Yesterday when I sat to plan my day, I had already felt a sense of accomplishment because the tasks that I needed to complete would put me ahead for the week and obviously make my week easier.  Well, what do they say about the best laid plans?

On the way to drop my son off at school, something said "On your way home stop at the park and walk around the track".  I'm thinking, "Really?  I'm not dressed to go the track and further more, I've got a lot to get accomplished today.  I've got a plan, remember!"  Well, I did as I was lead to do; but in my mind I was only going to walk one mile and leave!

I begin to walk at a pretty brisk pace around the track.  I figure as long as I'm out here I may as well get a decent cardio workout in.  I wasn't going to attempt to jog--you do see the All Stars I'm wearing, right!  I've got my tunes in my ears; and oh, just so that you know, whenever I do go for a walk or a task that doesn't take much thought, I listen to Gospel music.  I always need to hear from Him and I knew I was at that track because He placed that in my spirit.

Something very exciting happened to me last week that I want to share with you; but I can't right now.  When I can, I will!  It is something that I didn't think I was remotely interested in doing.  To be quite honest with you, it scared the mess out of me to even think about it!

With the counsel and support of friends and family, I was able to wrap my head around it and go for it.  You know what, let me be real about this--I let their belief in me propel me forward.  I sometimes see things in my friends that they don't see; so I thought this maybe one of those times when I need to trust what they see in me and run with it.  It is no secret that I credit God for everything I am, I have, and will be...period.  This is where He is AMAZING-- He knew that He had to place these people in my life to get me to walk in all that I am, to get me to the place I needed to be for Him to show me all that he is and how much He loves me.  When we are inspired to do something in our lives, we already possess all that we need in order to accomplish it.  He just needs for us to take our eyes off of the challenges and obstacles and place them on Him so that He can make it happen.

I met another individual that has been awarded this same opportunity, and she commented "The haters are coming out"!  We laughed about it, because it was funny how she said it; but we both know it's the truth.  Now one would think, I would somewhat be accustomed to this, especially having modeled.  I mean, how much more catty can anyone be!  Believe it or not, I don't like to be the center of attention.  I don't seek it and I am just fine flying under the radar.  Really!

I can't concern myself with what people will say or do as a result of my successes and failures.  I have to embrace all that I have been blessed with; own it and walk in it.  Sure, this sounds so simple and it is as long as it's praise and not criticism.  However to succumb to what will be said is to deny myself the chance to live my best life and experience God's goodness.  Yes, I'm sure I am going to have those moments of insecurity and doubt in my abilities.  I think that's only human!  I will commit to myself that those times will be brief and I will quickly get back to the work at hand, not holding back and making the most of all of my talents.

On my drive leaving the park, I felt a sense of peace that I did not have prior to going to the park.  Oh don't get me wrong, it's not as though I was in turmoil!  I was just heavy in thought and by being lead by my spirit I am now in a place of knowing regardless to what it may look like or feel like, it is going to more than work out in my favor.  Why?  I showed myself obedient with something as simple as going to the track and not home to get started on my plan for the day.  God's grace is sufficient to get all things done in half the time!

I could see things a lot clearer and be able to take a rest in knowing that since this opportunity is nothing I'd ever considered doing, God is going to direct my path and lead me in the way that I should go.  That's not to say that it will come without a hiccup or two, but He's got it worked out and knows exactly what I need in order to quiet that hiccup.  As a friend reminded me last week, these are the occassions that God likes because when it's over, and since I believe in Him, I won't be able to give anyone the glory but Him and this will be my testimony to you.

Make it AMAZING!
Rhonda

By the way, I walked two miles instead of the planned one!
